Tip of the Week July 10

 NX Tip of the Week
July 10, 2015

NX - Fixing issues with opening NX files from Windows Explorer

If you have had multiple versions of NX on your PC in Windows Explorer, there are times you can't double click on the file and have it open. At times, NX may open but the file does not open or it errors out. You may have multiple versions of NX loaded and you need to have Windows Explorer open the file in a specific version of NX when you double click.  Here is how to change/fix this:
1)  Open a command prompt (Windows Start Menu then type cmd in the search window - a black window should appear).

2)  Type in the following:  assoc .prt

3)  You should see .prt=UGpartfile

4)  Next, type in the following:  ftype UGpartfile

5)  If all is correct, the NX 10.0 is the version which you want to open when you double click from Windows Explorer, then you will see:
UGpartfile="C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 10.0\UGII\ugs_router.exe"  -ug -use_file_dir  "%1"

6)  Or, if you had NX 7.5 previously installed and you uninstalled it, you may see:  UGpartfile="C:\Program Files\UGS\NX 7.5\UGII\ugs_router.exe"  -ug -use_file_dir  "%1". Then again, you may see something different or nothing at all.

7)  This would mean the ugs_router.exe from NX 7.5 is being used and not the proper NX version you would prefer. In your case, you want it to use NX 10 so you would do the following:
In the command prompt for NX 10, type:
ftype UGpartfile="C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 10.0\UGII\ugs_router.exe"  -ug -use_file_dir "%1"
Note, NX 8 is the first version to use the Siemens directory and not UGS for the installation. If you have a 32 bit version of the product installed on a 64 bit machine, you will need to use C:\Program Files (x86)\Siemens\NX 8.0\UGII\ugs_router.exe.

In addition, when starting NX by double-clicking on an NX part file in Windows Explorer and you want to stop the 'Routing to Application' dialog from appearing, try adding "-disable-cancel" to the ugs_router.exe:
"C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 10.0\UGII\ugs_router.exe"  -ug -use_file_dir -disable_cancel "%1"

As always, contact support@allyplm.com for more information or help.

Review of Migration from SolidWorks to Solid Edge ST6

CAD specialist Jeffrey Heimgartner recently reviewed Solid Edge ST6 and focused on its ability to mass-migrate from SolidWorks. ST6’s Bulk Data Migrator, which was expanded with the update, is designed to help make the transition from SolidWorks to Solid Edge seamless – or to make it possible for users of Solid Edge to work with clients who may still use SolidWorks or other MCAD systems.

ST6 boasts that the Bulk Data Migrator “simplifies migration of competitive data to speed adoption of a stable CAD platform while protecting intellectual property.” Heimgartner put these claims to the test and found a number benefits in the migration process.

Getting Started Resource Library. ST6 has a SolidWorks Migration Wizard (and also wizards for other MCAD solutions) with an associated resource library that provides excellent technical support.

Specific and fast transfer process. Before transfer begins, the wizard gives you an option to save changes made to the configuration file to be saved to the existing or a new file. As the migration runs, SolidWorks opens up and cycles through each part and saves them as a DXF file. Heimgartner found that the migration of 30+ files took under 10 minutes.

Customizable interface. ST6 has a customizable interface which can be modified to be very similar to SolidWorks, making for a much shorter learning curve. The Command Finder is also available, which allows former SolidWorks users to type in commands from SolidWorks to find the Solid Edge equivalent.

These are just three of the time and cost savings benefits associated with Solid Edge ST6 and the transfer process from SolidWorks, or another MCAD solution. The ability to transfer CAD data from one system to another can be extremely costly and frustrating, but the Bulk Data Migrator in Solid Edge ST6 provides a cost-effective and user-friendly way to do so. Heimgartner concluded, “I think Solid Edge has done a good job of creating tools that give companies the ability to [re-use existing data].” For more information on Solid Edge ST6, visit Ally PLM's website.

Achieving Speedy Compliance with Aviation Industry Regulations

Aero Technics Design Ltd. designs better with Solid Edge. Interior aircraft design company creates layouts for aircraft reconfigurations within a single day. One of many keys to success was the ability to enhance design speed and accuracy using simplified parts and assemblies.

For these reasons, the choice of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software used by Aero Technics Design Ltd projects is an extremely important decision. Simon Jeffery, engineering director and head of design at Aero Technics Design Ltd, has worked within the industry for 25 years. When he was involved in setting up the company in April 2004, his design and aviation experience led him to believe that the best software for the job was the Solid Edge® solution from Siemens PLM Software.

“Given the high profile nature of projects that we are involved in, we needed design software that we could truly rely on. It needed to provide our designers with the design functionality and flexibility to handle the broad range of projects we are commissioned to provide, together with the accuracy and ease of use to allow them to work to deadlines with the utmost confidence. This is essentially a 3D task and Solid Edge’s varied features means that we can very quickly assess and adjust the gaps between the elements in the layout. We can view the main elements in 3D but can keep less important areas as 2D cut outs so we can work rapidly. In most cases with Solid Edge we can create the initial suggested layout in line with EASA requirements within a day." says engineering director Simon Jeffrey.

"My experience told me that Solid Edge would provide all these things, it may be that the customer has rethought aspects of the layout or wants to add additional elements such as class dividers. Solid Edge gives us the flexibility to make these sorts of changes very rapidly and smoothly. Working with demanding aviation industry customers, we need to ensure the highest levels of speed and accuracy for the projects we work on,” says Jeffery. “Solid Edge, with its 3D design power and versatile features, gives our designers the tools they need to meet customers’ requirements. They can work quickly and effectively knowing they can rely on the software’s accuracy to ensure their designs will comply with EASA regulations.”

3DConnexion Mice for CAD Design Engineers Are Economical Choice

Technology Assessment Group (TAG), an independent product consulting firm, which specializes in product evaluation and productivity measurement, recently conducted a research study to assess the economic impact of the 3D mouse on CAD design engineers.

GE, IBM and the University of Toronto via user interface research suggest substantial productivity gains resulting from using well-integrated 6-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) devices for complex 3D applications i.e. 3D CAD.

3D Mice
3D mice allow you to:

- naturally interact in designing by zooming, rotating and panning
- minimize design errors, explore models with superior navigation
- reduce mouse clicks and movements
- navigate simultaneously while creating and editing with ease

SpacePilot Pro
Key findings for CAD users while using 3D mice:

- 84%+ of CAD design engineers have reported significant improvement to their product designs and their ability to detect design problems
- 21% average productivity increase
- takes less than a month for a typical payback period

The report evaluated the anecdotal claims that 3D mice can significantly improve CAD design engineer productivity, and further sought to evaluate the user interface research suggesting impressive productivity gains.  Surveying 190 3D mice users, substantial gains of over 20% are being experienced by CAD design engineers while using 3D mice with their CAD applications.

6DoF navigation and simultaneous two-handedness were key factors leading to their improvements in underlying user interface research observations.

Charles Machine Works

Jason Inglis, CAD Administrator at Charles Machine Works recalls: “I have four different variations of the 3DConnexion in my shop.  The fluidity in which it allows me to design is unmatched.”

Nathan Emler, Drafting Checker at Ariel Corporation says: “I have found that in the years I have been using 3dConnexion's 3D mice that they have proven to be very durable and reliable.  Once you become accustomed to using one that when it is not available for using CAD software it is like not having a mouse for windows.  It is possible to get the job done but it is not very pleasant“.

According to the recent study, an investment in 3D mice can have an unusually fast payback – less than 30 days – which would lead you to the conclusion that any company with CAD design engineers should proactively consider adopting 3D mice.

You can obtain the SpacePilot Pro and SpaceMouse Pro 3D Mouse for 10% off from Ally PLM at http://www.AllyPLM.com/3dconnexion/.  But hurry, the offer ends soon!

A Quick Peek Inside Solid Edge ST6

Solid Edge University 2013 will be upon us soon.  Solid Edge ST6 will be officially announced by the director of Solid Edge Development, Dan Staples.

Ally PLM is offering up a Solid Edge Lunch Bytes: What's New in ST6 Part 1 webinar, a 30-minute web session dedicated to making you a better Solid Edge User, along with providing you a FREE Subway lunch!

A few new attributes like a New Relfective Display mode and Dimension auto-arrange will be unveiled.  Surfacing looks to be a focus for ST6, with new tools such as the Reflective Plane and Ruled Surface.

Check out the video on both:

As you can see from the Ken Grundey's video above, he says the Reflective Plane doesn't need an overhead geometric mirror to showcase the second half of the part previous to completion.  Usually you would model one half of the symmetric molded part and mirror the body of the other half when completed.  ST6 uses zebra shading tools for analyzing and inspecting the surface quality.   Ruled Surface uses existing geometry to to provide multiple options in order to create the surface.

Ken's video below shows the drafting process and how to make prints presentable and simpler to create.  According to Ken, Arrange Dimensions allow the user to automatically arrange dimensions to the standard defined by your template.  When using the Retrieve Dimension command to pull 3D model dimensions into 2D drawing and when updating a 3D model with an existing dimension drawing, dimensions don't always come in or update in a neat fashion.

Solid Edge ST6 will be upon us soon.  It will provide you with an elaborate amount of new tools and enhanced productivity.

"One of the biggest time savers in Solid Edge ST6 might be the ability to auto-arrange 2D detailing dimensions that were retrieved from the 3D model."  - Solid Edge ST6 BETA testing customer David Iverson, Drafting Checker at Ariel Corporation.
