How to import your existing Technology Database after installing a new version of CAMWorks for Solid Edge

When upgrading to a new version of CAMWorks for Solid Edge or installing a Service Pack, it is important to know that you can import your existing Technology Database.  During the installation, CAMWorks automatically creates a backup copy of your existing Technology Database and then installs the new “Out of the Box” Technology Database.  Here are the steps to import your existing Technology Database:

1.  Go into "Maintenance" from the main page:

2.  Use the "Import Database" option:

3.  Ensure that Solid Edge is not running and then click "Next":

4.  Browse to the techdb.mbd file that CAMWorks automatically backed up during installation.  This will be located as shown below:
                                                 C:\CAMWorksForSolidEdgeData\CAMWorks2014x64ForSolidEdge\backup\english\backup_01

5.  It is a good idea to backup the “Out of the Box” techdb.mbd file.  Then click “Next”:

6.  Click "Import" to import your existing Technology Database:

7.  Click “Finish” and then open Solid Edge and verify that your existing Technology Database information is active:

CAMWorks for Solid Edge 2014 Service Pack 1 Now Available

CAMWorks for Solid Edge 2014 SP1 is now available for download!

Key improvements in this service pack of CAMWorks for Solid Edge include:
  • 3-Axis to 5-Axis Conversion allows for shorter and more rigid tooling: Users of the 5-axis module can now convert their 3-axis toolpath to 5-axis with the 'Convert to 5-Axis' option with Holder Avoidance.
  • Advanced tool selection logic: This correction will result in automatic selection of the appropriate tools for more efficient toolpaths.
To alleviate any problems during installation:
  • When installing CAMWorks for Solid Edge 2014, we recommend that users right click on the CAMWorks for Solid Edge executable and click on Run as administrator
  • Some of the existing users ran into a problem with importing their existing TechDB. Instructions for importing the existing TechDB can found in Section 11 of the Installation Guide available in the Downloads Area (login required)
This release also addresses the issue of CAMWorks hardware (dongle) license intefering with the Solid Edge license when the CAMWorks dongle was removed. To learn more about CAMWorks for Solid Edge, click here.

Using a Solid Edge Sketch for Blank Stock Creation

CAMWorks for Solid Edge is embedded in Solid Edge and provides many options for defining your blank stock.  Using CAMWorks Automatic Feature Recognition and producing tool paths using the CAMWorks Technical Database produces excellent results but the default blank stock setting uses a bounding block to define the blank stock.  As you can see in this video, the first roughing operation cuts the 4 corners of the octagon shape since the blank stock is set to bounding block:

For this example I want to define my blank stock as the outer perimeter of the octagon shape as if the perimeter has already been machined.  Notice in the image below I can use a Solid Edge sketch to define my blank stock and CAMWorks will extrude the sketch to define the thickness of the blank stock.

As you can see in this video, the first roughing operation does not cut the 4 corners of the octagon shape since the blank stock is using the Solid Edge sketch to define the blank stock:

This example is just one of the many benefits of using an integrated CAM solution.  The overall machining time is greatly reduced by being able to work inside of Solid Edge and eliminate unnecessary tool paths by using a sketch that was already created.
