Have you heard about the great unique features of ST7?

Ally PLM Application Engineer, Matt Johnson, thinks "It’s exciting to see these new features begin to leak out and I’m excited to get my hands on the commercial release version of ST7.

Matt reviewed the new information and said this about the new "Fixed Length Curve" option:

Have you ever been asked to “push a rope”?  Never worked too well, did it? Until now… well, sort of. Truth be told we can only really do this conceptually inside of the new functionality in ST7. Now we can push a rope and do something useful...

One of the sneak peek features in ST7, the forthcoming release of Solid Edgeis the ability to add a dimension to control the length of a curveThe new ‘Fixed Length Curve’ option looks like a great enhancement. It provides a method to pre-define a fixed length to then manipulate it, it’s just like working with a piece of pre-cut rope.

I think customers who sweep profiles but have a need to know the unformed length will really appreciate and find value in this enhancement. There’s no doubt that ‘Fixed Length Curve’  will greatly aid in these sort of processes and design approaches.

I have no way of knowing for sure but I’m hoping this same functionality will carry over to XpresRoute, Frame, and Harness as well.

Find out about the “Fixed Length Curve” here: http://community.plm.automation.siemens.com/t5/Solid-Edge-Community-Blog/ST7-Sneak-Peak-Fixed-Length-Curve/ba-p/25442

Solid Edge University 2014 - Save The Date

Siemens PLM Software recently announced that Atlanta, Georgia will be the location of Solid Edge University 2014.  From May 12-14th, the Solid Edge user community will once again gather with planners, developers and support engineers to learn more about Solid Edge's capabilities.

Solid Edge University is enjoyable, but it is also an integral part of improving businesses, both large and small.  Some justification for traveling to Atlanta for #SEU14 include:

  • You will improve the rate of innovation in your development process, as Solid Edge University provides exposure to new technologies allowing more innovation.
  • When you participate in hands-on training sessions on existing and advanced new features inside Solid Edge, it will make you more productive in completing designing projects quicker and with fewer resources.
  • They will allow you to provide input on the new product features to improve product quality and reduce manufacturing issues to continue to focus on you as the users' specific needs.
  • You get to network with hundreds of other Solid Edge users from near and far to expand and enhance your partnerships with various customers and suppliers.

Scott Christensen, of Summit Tool Design, says: “I attended the very first National Solid Edge User Group meeting in Chicago in 1997 and also several others in the years that have followed. Even presenting several Hands-On sessions for a couple of years. Every time I attend, I learn and share ways to improve productivity with Solid Edge. A trip to the user group also offers the opportunity to talk directly to the software planners and developers and present workflow problems and make enhancement requests. I’m a small business owner. Time away from the office means lost hours and revenue. The time and dollars invested to meet and learn from the Solid Edge community is easily justified.”

Rick Mason, Director at Masco Design Services states: " I have been earning my living using Solid Edge for 16 years, during which time I have attended several Summit conferences, Beta testing sessions etc. in the US. There is simply nothing like getting together with other dedicated Solid Edge users and meeting with planners, developers and support engineers 'up close & personal' to show them what you are doing with their software, learning how to use it better and putting your point across with regard to improvements which will help you do your job better.  The quality of work I produce today is the best I have ever achieved, largely due to the improvements in Solid Edge that I and other Users have helped to instigate, test & refine. If we sit on our butts and just complain that: a) we don't understand properly how the software works, or b) something is buggy & doesn't work right, or c) the features we really need are missing ... not much will ever improve. If Siemens are willing to host an event to help improve our knowledge & skills and also gather feedback about how we use their product & what needs improving – just try to keep me away!"

A Quick Peek Inside Solid Edge ST6

Solid Edge University 2013 will be upon us soon.  Solid Edge ST6 will be officially announced by the director of Solid Edge Development, Dan Staples.

Ally PLM is offering up a Solid Edge Lunch Bytes: What's New in ST6 Part 1 webinar, a 30-minute web session dedicated to making you a better Solid Edge User, along with providing you a FREE Subway lunch!

A few new attributes like a New Relfective Display mode and Dimension auto-arrange will be unveiled.  Surfacing looks to be a focus for ST6, with new tools such as the Reflective Plane and Ruled Surface.

Check out the video on both:

As you can see from the Ken Grundey's video above, he says the Reflective Plane doesn't need an overhead geometric mirror to showcase the second half of the part previous to completion.  Usually you would model one half of the symmetric molded part and mirror the body of the other half when completed.  ST6 uses zebra shading tools for analyzing and inspecting the surface quality.   Ruled Surface uses existing geometry to to provide multiple options in order to create the surface.

Ken's video below shows the drafting process and how to make prints presentable and simpler to create.  According to Ken, Arrange Dimensions allow the user to automatically arrange dimensions to the standard defined by your template.  When using the Retrieve Dimension command to pull 3D model dimensions into 2D drawing and when updating a 3D model with an existing dimension drawing, dimensions don't always come in or update in a neat fashion.

Solid Edge ST6 will be upon us soon.  It will provide you with an elaborate amount of new tools and enhanced productivity.

"One of the biggest time savers in Solid Edge ST6 might be the ability to auto-arrange 2D detailing dimensions that were retrieved from the 3D model."  - Solid Edge ST6 BETA testing customer David Iverson, Drafting Checker at Ariel Corporation.
