NX 8.5 and NX 9 - Can’t search/open NX 8.5/9.0 help documentation?

Here is the workflow to resolve this issue: 

1) Start- Control Panel – Type appwiz.cpl – hit enter.

2) Remove/uninstall all older versions of Java.     

      a. Right mouse click on the program – uninstall.

     b. If you are running a 64 bit machine make sure you remove both 32 bit and 64 bit version of Java.

3)  Open Internet Explorer – Versions of Internet Explorer that are supported as web browsers for NX9 listed on the Siemens website are Internet Explorer 9 & 10, but we have used 11 without any issues. (https://support.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com/docs/nx/nx9/rn/index.html#uid:index_sysinfo:id1533284:browser_requirements )

4)  Make sure Internet Explorer is the default web browser on your machine:

      a. Open Internet Explorer – Tools – Internet Options –Program – Make Default 

5)  Make sure NX help documentation is installed on your machine:

      a. Here is how you can check if documentation is installed on your machine 

          For NX 9:

               - Start – All Program – Siemens NX 9.0 

          For NX 8.5:

6)  Click on the link to download and install the latest version of Java on your machine. (http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)

7)  If you have Internet Explorer as the default, the link will automatically open in Internet Explorer.

8)  Make sure you download both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Java.

9)  Run/install 32 &64 bit version of Java. The process is very straight forward you just have to follow the prompts.

10)  Restart your computer.

11)  Download the Java patch

       a. https://download.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com/download-n.php/ug/product_updates/ugdoc/nx9/qagent/nx85_nx9_java7_u65_u67.zip

       b. Siemens website ( Webkey required -  Email us at technical.support@allyplm.com If you need help with the webkey)

       c. Download the second patch 

12)  Download and Install 7 zip from this website http://www.7-zip.org/  (do not use windows default program to unzip this as it will not work). 

13)  You will have to unzip nx85_nx9_java7_u65_u67.zip folder with the help of 7 zip.

14)  Copy the contents of the folder nx85_nx9_java7_u65_u67.

15)  Paste the contents to the following locations:

a.       For NX 9.0

-          C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 9.0\UGDOC\html_files\nx_help\

-          C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 9.0\REL_INFO\release_notes\english

-          C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 9.0\REL_INFO\whatsnew\english

b.      For NX 8.5

-          C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 8.5\UGDOC\html_files\nx_help\

-          C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 8.5\REL_INFO\release_notes\english

-          C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 8.5\REL_INFO\whatsnew\english

16)  Once you are done with the above procedure, launch NX documentation.

17)  On the security warning Java window – click on don’t block.

18)  Type something in the search box and verify if you are able to search the documentation.

Solid Edge - Using Property Manager in Solid Edge

Happy New Year! In this week's Ally PLM Tip of the Week, we will take a look at using Property Manager in Solid Edge.  Property manager allows us to access multiple properties across multiple files.  Please take a look at the following video: 

In this video, you can see how Property Manager can help edit properties from multiple files in one dialog.  You can also apply it to an entire folder.

NX - Using Custom Boundaries in NX CAM

In machining, there are often situations where you need to add or remove extra material in a specific area of your part but not the entire part.  In NX CAM, you can apply custom parameters to individual boundary members allowing you to add or remove extra material to a certain area of the part.  A good example of this is when using Planar Mill and editing the Part Boundary to add or remove extra material.  Below are the steps to add extra material to two specific areas of a part.

     

1)  In the part shown below, a Planar Mill operation cuts a portion of the part detail to finish size:

2)  For this demonstration we want to add .030" to the faces highlighted below:

3)  Edit the Part Boundaries:

4)  Select Edit to be able to edit members individually:

5)  Use the "Next" arrow to toggle through each individual boundary member.  The active boundary member is shown in orange:

6)  Once the boundary member is highlighted in orange, select Custom Member Data:

7)  Apply 0.030" stock to the boundary member:

8)  Repeat steps 4, 5, 6 & 7 for the second face to which you want to add stock.

9)  Generate the operation and see that the cutter leaves 0.030" extra material on the desired faces and leaves 0.000" on the rest of the faces:

Solid Edge - PMI Dimensions

When working with 3D PMI dimensions, the default setting is for all dimensions to stay a set pixel size. So no matter how far in or out you zoom, they will stay the same size. The keyboard shortcut to increase the PMI font size is (CTRL+SHIFT+.) and to decrease font size you can use (CTRL+SHIFT+,). This is normally the behavior you want as it will stay the same size no matter how big or small your parts or assemblies are. However, when working with larger parts or assemblies containing many parts, it may start to become difficult to see. As you can see below, when the model is zoomed out and the option is set to Pixel Size PMI, our view starts to get cluttered: 

We can change the setting to Model Size PMI located on the PMI tab as seen below. What this option does is set dimensions and annotations to the active font style size: 

When the model is zoomed in or out, the dimensions stay at a set dimension and adjust with the model as seen below: 

If the size of the dimensions is too large or small, it can then be adjusted through the Styles menu which is to the left of the Model Size PMI button. 

Another great question that we get asked a lot is how to display dual units on all dimensions. This can be done in the Styles menu as well. Simply click on the Secondary Units tab as seen below and select the box next to Dual unit display. There are many options that can be applied to the secondary unit such as round off value, if you would like parentheses or brackets, what justification you want the dimension at, and many more. Again, changing this option in the Styles menu will adjust all dimensions that share the same style formatting. If you would like to add secondary units to a single dimension simply right click on it and go in to the properties. On the dimension properties dialog box will be a Secondary Units tab just like the Styles menu:
